ABOUT US

Buchtel High School opened in 1931 and is named after Akron industrialist and philanthropist John R. Buchtel, who helped to organize and finance a number of early Akron firms, including the Goodrich Corporation. Buchtel is best known for his role in the establishment of Buchtel College, which later became the University of Akron. Buchtel and his wife contributed more than $500,000 to the college over the course of his life.

In 2012, the old Buchtel High School building was torn down after the completion of the new "Community Learning Center". The school was designed to house not only grades 9-12, but also students in grades 7-8 who had previously attended Perkins Middle School. This was part of a larger project called "Imagine Akron Community Learning Centers" to rebuild or remodel all Akron Public Schools.

Starting in the 2012 - 2013 school year, the 9th and 10th graders will do New Tech. New Tech is a model used in the new ways of teaching. Its mostly based around "Project Based Learning" which students do projects to show what they know. New Tech also will offer new types of technology used for teaching. This includes using laptops and Smart Boards.

AFJROTC was founded under Public Law 88-647, The ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964.  Our unit, OH-942, was established at Buchtel Community Learning Center in Fiscal Year 1995.  Our school was selected for a unit based on the past performance and potential of our young men and women, community support, and the support of the Akron Public School District.

Our unit motto is "Second to None."  Most cadets will eventually serve their community, state, and nation as solid citizens.  Many will have the opportunity to assume a leadership role.  As they prepare for these future challenges and opportunities, AFJROTC cadets will set the example for others to follow!
